The SNP's honeymoon period in charge of WDC seems to be over when at the Council meeting on 27/6/2007, yes nicely timed just prior to the summer recess, they failed their first big test as the Council administration by turning their backs on the Council workforce and agreeing a single status document which will cut the existing pay and conditions for thousands of Council workers.
The New Labour opposition fully supported the SNP in this attack on workers which will prove to be a huge disincentive for staff just as the new Council should be trying to build bridges with our workers after the elections in May when people voted for change. Many employees are left bemused by the new Council leaders pronouncement that the SNP view our 6,000+ staff as the Councils "greatest resource". Strange way of re-enforcing this point when the first major policy action of the SNP is to put the boot into workers wages and conditions, particularly low paid women staff!
The trades unions are understandably angry with the new SNP Council at this betrayal and the SSP give a firm commitment to support the unions in any way we can to ensure their members wages and conditions are not plundered by this new SNP/Labour pact.
The next big policy test for the SNP is the public private partnership (PPP) as a funding mechanism for building our new schools.
SNP have confirmed before and after the local elections that PPP is probably the worst and most costly funding mechanism to re-build our schools. Will they follow this principled position through and scrap the current PPP proposals? or like the single status debacle will they bottle it and agree to the Privatisation of our schools? Watch this space!!!

The race to the bottom in workers’ wages and conditions is gathering pace. Aer Lingus management have declared war on its workforce, as they shift operations from Shannon to Belfast in an attempt to drive down wages and impose poorer working conditions. If they get away with it then the jobs, wages and working conditions of all Aer Lingus staff will be under threat.
According to a report from the Bank of Ireland the rich are getting richer and the wealth gap between the rich and the working class is increasing. In 2006 there were 3,000 new millionaires making a total of 33,000 (excluding the value of residential property).

This is off particular interest, house prices falling by that much in Ireland, that indicates that the UK will soon follow suit. As we go more and more into a low-wage economy (like every other western country) it follows that prices will have to fall, a realignment. Of course it will be the turn of the middle classes next, indeed that has already started for some of them. We were sold globalisation on the premise that it would bring the poor of the world upto our standards, right round the world, the truth is it has brought many of us down to the poor of the world standards, the very reverse.
