West Dunbartonshire Council is considering appointing a preferred bidder to privatise our schools without knowing the name of the successful bidder!!! Cllr's will only be asked to pick Company A,B or C. How underhand, secret and transparent is that?
Council Taxpayers have a right to know what Company they will be paying a massive mortgage to for the next 30 years.
There is a sickening rush to get this bid signed before the elections in 3 weeks time.
This crucial decision should be delayed until after the new Council meets in May 2007.

There is MORE to all this then people think Jim,much more. You know what I mean, wink, wink, say no more.
This is what is so wrong in politics and life itself...
We have the present Trident and the Trident that is to come many years down the road. Unless Scotland becomes Independent it can do nothing about Trident. If ALL the MSPs shout till their blue in the face it will not do any good. For the SNP to say they will "Invest in schools and hospitals, not in Trident" what does that mean???. They have no say in stopping the money going to pay for Trident as long as Scotland is in the union.
Now bear with me on this one...
Blair is in a rush to get the NEW Trident deal done before he leaves office, to get Britain committed to the deal. He says we must start planning now. How will Scotland fair if it goes Independent in four years time? as Scotland may well have to still pay for the NEW Trident as when it was signed upto and funds committed to pay for it Scotland was still part of the union thereby must still pay there share of the cost?. Can someone Enlighten Me on that point. I don`t know the answer. Please remember Britain may well have signed upto to buy it from the USA before Scotland goes Independent.
This is the kind of people New Labour work with. Saw it on the Compass web site...
New Labour and the end of welfare by Jonathan Rutherford

"In the US, UnumProvident’s claims management had been coming under increasing scrutiny. In 2003, the Insurance Commissioner of the State of California announced that the three big insurance companies had been conducting their business fraudulently. As a matter of ordinary practice and custom they had compelled claimants to either accept less than the amount due under the terms of the policies or resort to litigation. The following year a multistate review forced UnumProvident to reopen hundreds of thousands of rejected insurance claims. Commissioner John Garamendi described UnumProvident as, ‘an outlaw company. It is a company that for years has operated in an illegal fashion."
"In 2003 the DWP launched its Pathways to Work pilot projects. They would be the forerunners of the kind of ‘active welfare’ system promoted by UnumProvident and the Woodstock academics. At the Labour Party conference that year UnumProvident organised a fringe meeting with employment minister Andrew Smith and health minister Rosie Winterton. In her speech, Joanne Hindle, corporate services director for UnumProvident, spelt out the future direction of Pathways."
"The company rebranded itself as Unum Group. In January 2007 a performance rating from Credit Suisse was low but with an upside driven by higher than expected UK earnings and a lower than expected tax rate. UnumProvidentUK with 2.3million individuals covered by its insurance schemes and pre-tax profits of £109.8m provides up to 25 per cent of the post tax, operating income of the UnumProvident group of companies."
"In a memorandum submitted to the House of Commons Select Committee on Work and Pensions, UnumProvident define their method of working : ‘Our extended experience...has shown us that the correct model to apply when helping people to return to work is a bio-psychosocial one’. Waddell and Aylward adopt the same argument in their monograph. Disease is the only objective, medically diagnosable pathology. Sickness is a temporary phenomenon. Illness is a behaviour - ‘all the things people say and do that express and communicate their feelings of being unwell. IB trends are a social and cultural phenomenon rather than a health problem. The solution is not to cure the sick, but a ‘fundamental transformation in the way society deals with sickness and disabilities. The goal and outcome of treatment is work."

"My name is Dr. Judy Morris. I was an Emergency Room Physician disabled by an immunological condition known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With my doctor's approval I submitted applications for disability benefits from UNUM Insurance Company of Portland, Maine, with whom I had purchased an individual policy and been provided a group policy through my employer."
"UNUM set about denying my claims for disability benefits by having me followed by Private Investigators for over 2 1/2 weeks, including one night when someone tried to run me off the road. I subsequently saw the PI reports and they were falsified regarding that incident and some other incidents that occurred while PI's were following me."
"UNUM had doctors from Portland call my doctors on the telephone and tell them I was "difficult and litigious" and imply that I was malingering or a fraud. When my doctors wouldn't agree with these characterizations, UNUM's "doctors" wrote up reports of these conversations claiming my doctors said negative and untrue things about me. UNUM then used these fraudulent reports as rationale to deny my claims."
"I have appealed through UNUM's sham appeals process, after getting two second opinions from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome experts. I have appealed and complained in writing over and over to the Massachusetts Department of Insurance, the Massachusetts Insurance Fraud Bureau, the Massachusetts Attorney General's office and some members of the State Legislature, as well as on a Federal level to the Department of Labor, the Department of Justice, the Federal Trade Commission, the FBI, US Attorneys, the media, and many others."
"I have tried using attorneys three times and been disappointed. Finally I read the law books myself. I'm currently in contact with over 100 UNUM claimants and several dozen attorneys who have lawsuits against UNUM. Two claimants I knew of committed suicide most certainly because of the oppression of being involved in a lawsuit against this company in addition to deal with their disabling conditions. One other woman I know of attempted suicide due to UNUM's actions. Private Investigators have harassed and intimidated claimants all over the country. In one instance they rammed their car into one woman's car. Many claimants have gone bankrupt. Some claimants are homeless or have experienced periods of homelessness. None of these people have recovered from their medical conditions just because UNUM says they have."
"On October 30, 1998, I filed Pro Se, a lawsuit in Springfield, Massachusetts, Federal Court, a lawsuit against UNUM Insurance as well as my former employer, the Massachusetts Attorney General, Department of Insurance, Insurance Fraud Bureau, a State legislator, and 2 insurance agents accusing them of Racketeering, Extortion, Mail and Wire Fraud, and multiple counts of Attempted Murder and Murder."
"I am documenting my attempts to get this lawsuit into a court of law and in front a jury, on this website."

With all this going on people might well be too frighting to seek help if they become disabled as it`s being alleged that this company may try to kill or harm you in someway. New Labour are dealing with this company?.
